Predicting and Evaluating Regenerative Treatment Outcomes for Degenerated Intervertebral Discs: Developing Therapies in a Nutrient Limited Environment

Abstract:

The intervertebral disc (IVD) is the cartilaginous component of the spine. It is responsible for the flexibility of the spine as well as acting as a shock absorber. Problems associated with the IVD are a major reason for back pain, an issue faced by 85% of Americans. The IVD is the largest avascular structure in the human body, so changes in disc structure and subsequent small changes in nutrient supply can threaten the survival of endogenous IVD cells as well as transplanted cells. As the cells die, the ability of the disc to remodel its extracellular matrix (ECM) declines and the disc degenerates. One of the major barriers to IVD regeneration strategies is creating an environment conducive to cell survival in a low-transport structure.

The Giers’ Lab works on methods to evaluate regenerative therapies for the disc both in vitroand in vivo in the context of these nutrient limitations. Furthermore, the Lab works to identify patients that would make good candidates for specific therapies.

Positions Available:

Dr. Morgan Giers is searching for one PhD student to focus on MRI image processing, clinical data, mathematical modeling, and laboratory specimen processing. Prior experience with Matlab, image processing software, Comsol Multiphysics, and/or histology is considered a plus. The candidate should have a background in Engineering. The position is available for a Fall 2019 or earlier start in the Bioengineering program at Oregon State University. Funding is available.

Application:

If you are interested in a position in the Giers’ Lab please contact Dr. Giers with your CV and cover letter at Morgan.Giers@OregonState.edu
