ICHEI Fellows
the two ladies at Depaul
Two months went by very fast for the International CHEI (ICHEI) Fellows in the US. This semester, two teachers from Chongqing and Hefei are completing fellowships at DePaul University in Chicago. We asked the two ladies to share what they have learned working with their mentor, Nicholas Thomas, CHEI academic advisor. Let’s read what they had to say.
Alice Xu, Anhui Foreign Languages University
Founded in 1898, DePaul University is the nation’s largest Catholic university and is located in Chicago, Illinois. Late last year, The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation Center for Student Development and Engagement opened at DePaul. The Center’s amenities are very comprehensive and it has been established in the School of Hospitality Leadership (SHL) as a resource for students to learn more about opportunities at SHL and exciting careers in the booming hospitality industry.
Students who major in hospitality take courses that can be divided into three areas: liberal studies, business core and hospitality leadership. Courses included in Hospitality Leadership include foundation, milestone, concentration and specialization.
Jean Zhang, Chongqing University of Education
There are nine hospitality courses we’re taking this semester: Exploring Global Hospitality, Private Club Management, International Wine Education and Management, Hospitality Business Etiquette, Social and Wedding Special Event Management, Speaker Series, Hospitality Leadership and Self Development, Hospitality Leadership and Teams, Introduction to Tourism and Hospitality. DePaul has three 10-week academic terms in an academic year. The first six are face-to-face courses; the latter three are online courses.
Alice:
1. Student-centered classroom: Classroom interactions are very common between students and instructors, which is very different from China’s hospitality management higher education. In the classroom, instructors are only responsible for delivering basic knowledge and students have to accomplish a lot of study and assignments after class including papers, group assignments, and so on, which can be very helpful for cultivating students with all kinds of abilities.
2. Experienced faculty: Many instructors in the SHL worked for many years in the hospitality industry, such as hotels, restaurants, cruise lines, private clubs and wedding planning. This means they can incorporate hospitality industry and theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice into the classroom.
3. Teaching pedagogies: Instructors in the SHL apply case studies, role-plays and project-oriented teaching pedagogies in their classrooms. They do well in inspiring students’ thinking and encouraging students to ask questions. Also, there are abundant practical links in the courses, which means that students can put what they have learned into practice.
4. Online learning resources: DePaul has developed an online learning management system which is called Desire 2 Learn (D2L). There are three kinds of courses at DePaul: face-to-face online and hybrid (combination of face-to-face and online). This semester, our dear mentor Nick and the previous DePaul ICHEI fellow Kate Liu, worked together to develop a Global Learning Experience (GLE). It’s an attempt to mix students from the US, China and Mongolia in one class and accomplish transnational teaching with the aid of D2L. As hospitality management educators, we all agree that GLE is a great new attempt, and we should learn from Nick and Kate how to develop online courses for our students when we return to China.
Jean:
The most shocking thing is the integration of teaching and hospitality industry at DePaul. First, DePaul brings the hospitality industry into the classroom and encourages deep cooperation with industry. For example, faculty member Shelley invites the industry elites from different fields to communicate with students face-to-face in the Speaker Series course every week. Second, DePaul leads students and classes out of the traditional classroom to interact with the hospitality industry in real-world environments. For instance, Professor Debe organizes field trips in different private clubs every week. He also provides many internship opportunities in the Private Club Management course. Students are always excited and positive. The faculty and staff at DePaul have a high sense of responsibility, excellent vision, efficient management and professional team spirit.
Alice & Jean:
From May 3-7, we visited San Diego and joined two other ICHEI fellows, Mr. Zhang and Mr. Wang, who are studying at San Diego State University. We met with Carl Winston, CHEI managing director; Carol Chen, CHEI finance manager; Brian Blake and Professor Gene Lamke. We talked about our gains and challenges in the US, with specific focus on teaching methods and teaching ideas. The meeting in San Diego made us understand more deeply about our missions and duties as hospitality management educators after we return to China. We really appreciate Brian Blake and Professor Gene Lamke for taking good care of us in San Diego. It was a memorable experience.
Alice:
Learning and living in Chicago
is really a wonderful and precious experience, which makes me more confident, more positive and more passionate for the hospitality management education. I am very happy and lucky to work with Nick, Lisa, Misty, Shelley, Oliver, Frank and other excellent faculty members of SHL and to learn along with Zhang Jin from Chongqing University of Education. Thank you, CHEI very much for providing me this precious opportunity and I really appreciate my lovely mentor Nick for taking care of my study and life in Chicago. Also, I wish to express my gratitude to every member of the Marriott Foundation and CHEI for supporting and helping me. I sincerely wish that we can cooperate deeply to improve the hospitality management education in China in the future.
Jean:
The most important achievement is the new inspiration of my life attitude, especially for exploring new things and being more persistent in achieving my goals. It’s no doubt that the ICHEI fellow life in Chicago is one of the most impressive experiences in my life.
Please allow me to thank Dr. Nicholas Thomas again. He always takes care of us and considers our comfort. And I must thank CHEI for providing the precious chance to be an ICHEI Fellow. Then, I want to thank everyone on the CHEI team. I’m very happy to learn along with Xu Jing from Anhui Foreign Languages University. Thank you all so much!
