Summer vacation is a great opportunity for JXIHSDers to take a rest and pursue what they want, especially for our students. In which, many of them join the summer school around the world.

Ella

Before this, the 11th grader Anna shared her experience at the Yale Global Young Scholars Program (YYGS) Summer School. Today, the 10th grader Ella is going to tell us something about her summer school life in Johns Hopkins University.

Program

JHU Engineering Innovation is an exciting, college-level, summer program for motivated high school students with an aptitude in math and science and an interest in (or curiosity about) engineering. This program has been available to high school students since 2006. In the program, students learn to think and problem-solve like engineers and have the opportunity to earn Johns Hopkins University (JHU) credit.

By applying knowledge of math and science to labs and hands-on projects, the concepts learned in high school classrooms are linked to real-world practice.  Additionally, students’ confidence grows as they attend college-level lectures, solve problems, test theories, and ultimately learn to think like engineers.

Over this four — or five—week (depending upon the site) program, students complete lab activities in civil, chemical, electrical/computer, mechanical engineering and materials science.  They also prepare a presentation in response to a Request for Proposal, learn about engineering economics, write a research paper, take weekly quizzes, and complete a comprehensive final exam.

Academic

EI had two Sections, and I was at the Hood Section of Hood College. In Hood, there were four subgroups, each group included 20 students, two professors and one teaching assistant (TAs are generally the students who have joint this project before)

The academic aspects of EI
were not the same as I expected. It was not just a lecture or some quizzes. Instead, we had to do many experiments, including measuring the Young’s modulus of spaghetti, building bridges with spaghetti and epoxy. To design mouse clips, to do the basic experiments of chemistry (distillation, chromatography, heat transfer) ……

During the four weeks, we finished eight experiments. Because students were grouped together, we became familiar with each other. Of course, each experiment was asked to complete a report and an Excel spreadsheet for processing the data.

The most uncomfortable memory for me was analyzing the data compilation and experimental report in the Material Lab. Because of the large amount of data, the complicated data-analysis, I was kind of desperate for real at that time.

However, the report was easy for me. It was mainly a process of listening to the teacher, recording the key points, and applying the formula to the actual examples to achieve the results. If you didn’t understand it, you can raise your hand and ask questions. You can also review the lessons after class.

Quizzes and Exam made me recognize what is the College Level. Quizzes were weekly test, three times in total. It was kind of like YueKao in China.

Final Exam impressed me most. Final included in-class and take-home. In-class was a 300-credits, two-hour exam.

Ella

The take-home exam asked students to finish 5 design topics and submitted within one day. To solve these five questions, we had to rely on what we learned. It took me heart-broken 9 hours to finish the take-home. I remembered the next day when the professor checked this take-home exam, he smiled and told us: “Welcome to university!”

生活 Life

EI Program had a RA team for our campus life. In addition to the voluntary activities organized every night (such as watching movies, singing in the basement), they were responsible for our nightly check to ensure the safety of everyone.

Every Saturday, RAs organized mandatory activities, and Sundays were free time. In the past three trips, we visited Hershey To
wn, Johns Hopkins University Homewood, Washington, DC.

I had lot of memories with our RAs. Diane is the general manager of RA. Every time she saw us, she smiled and said: “Ladies, how are you doing today?” She can also remember our relationships between each other. And she seemed to love everyone wholeheartedly.

Ella(左二)和小伙伴们

The RAs made a PPT of photos of all the students, 92 students in total. Whether the student was quiet, positive, cheerful, or introverted. Regardless of nationality and personality, each person had at least one single photo and numerous group photos. The smile appeared on everyone’s face, which was so great.

One of my photos was Caroline (our RA) and I. That was a very large picture, which occupied a half-multiple layout. This feeling was wonderful. It seemed that they did nothing important, but why can I feel that I am valued?

In addition, there were many friends here, including Chinese and Korean half Marshall, Columbia girl Gabriela, German American-born Eric, Brazilian boy Paul, SJ from India, Turkish roommate Elif, American girl Isabella, and my favorite Beijing girls Rong Rong and Tracy. Within them, the entire summer was really super good.

On the day of the separation, Gabriela hugged me tightly when she left. “Thank you Ella, I am so happy to meet you, thank you for all your help.” Rong Rong stayed up late until 2:00 pm after I taking on the bus and gave me a big hug. Diane saw it and said with a smile: “This may be a true friend.”

In all, this month is short in reunion and long in expectation!
