TOEFL: 111
SAT: 2230 (M: 770, CR: 730, W: 730)Hobbies: Movies, Graphic Design, BadmintonResult: Vassar CollegeRunner-Up: Colgate UniversityDale's Story中焦虑几乎陪伴我走过了整个申请季。
Anxiety accompanied me throughout the whole application season. At Shanghai Foreign Language School, peer pressure is part of my daily life: when I was busy preparing for the midterm exam at school, some of my classmates had already started taking SAT classes at educational institutions during the week. The moment I walked out of my TOEFL test center, I got the news that some of my friends were applying for summer programs at universities in the US. Even worse, when I was still rushing between classrooms at Brown University for its summer program under the scorching sun, some of my peers had already completed their Personal Statements. No matter what I did, it seemed that I was behind at every step. Despite all of this pressure, I did not snap during the application season—because of Jeremy.
I met Jeremy Goren in October 2014. This towering man with a foreign face, who, incredibly, could speak extremely fluent Chinese, was utterly different from many of the other study-abroad agents. He was in a hoodie (with a Columbia University logo), as I can recall, standing at his office door waiting for my mother and me. The conference room was only the size of half of my bedroom and was certainly not as lavish as many agencies I had been to before, but it was cozy. Sitting down, I was not immediately interrogated about my GPA, SAT scores, TOEFL scores, and extracurricular activities. Instead, he asked me why I wanted to study abroad and what major I would like to study in university. After a conversation no longer than an hour, I told my parents with confidence in our car—yes, I believe that Jeremy is capable of helping me ace my application.
Jeremy is never in a rush—this attitude is the complete opposite of my occasional panic attack. He is in total control of each and every deadline, always leaving me enough time to prepare all of my materials. Between the personal statement, the supplementary essays, and the application submission, he takes each step nice and steady. If not for Jeremy, I would not have completed my work with excellence and I would have gotten lost in the hundreds of Word and PDF documents and webpages.
Jeremy has a great team of essay instructors. It is impossible not to mention Adam here. For many years I was confident that my English writing was at its peak—or at least, very good, but Adam’s emails and comments pulled me back to reality from my daydreaming. I learned that my personal statement was riddled with a plethora of metaphors, made-up facts and sublimation of words without true meanings. However, this essay turned out to be the best essay I had produced during the application season because of Adam’s patient instruction and criticism without hesitation. With my personal statement alone, I was accepted to Case Western and Colgate (these two schools have no supplementary essay requirements). Honestly speaking, I was astonished when I heard the news—but after thinking about it, they were within expectation based on my application.
ECL has given me even more in addition to what I mentioned above—KFC classes (Natasha gives amazingly interesting lectures), SAT U.S. History class (Michael, Jeremy’s father, is a truly learned man), the post-application-season college selection counseling, and the Vassar alumna whom Jeremy introduced me to. I am deeply grateful for the help from each employee at ECL. Without them, I would not have achieved what I have today.
