Two PhD studentship positions are open for the fall semester 2019 in the lab of Dr. Zhiyong Cheng, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at University of Florida. The chosen candidate will be supported by full scholarships.

Dr. Cheng’s lab seeks to understand the molecular mechanism of metabolic diseases (obesity and type 2 diabetes), with the goal of developing mechanism-based strategies for early diagnose and treatment of the diseases. Specifically, we are studying the cellular mechanism of adipocyte formation and expansion during obesity development, i.e., how FoxO1 and autophagy regulate adipogenesis and beiging of white adipose tissue (Eijkelenboom and Burgering. Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology 2013; Altshuler-Keylin and Kajimura. Science Signaling 2017). We collaborate with nano-medicine experts to develop nano-devices to deliver drugs to treat obesity and metabolic syndrome. Another project ongoing in the lab is to study the epigenetic mechanism of diabetes progression, particularly focusing on DNA methylation (Davegårdh C et al. Molecular Metabolism 2018; Cheng Z, et al. Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry 2018). This is a translational research program, where we use cell culture for in vitro mechanistic study, and recruit obese individuals to examine the potential of epigenetic markers to diagnose early-stage prediabetes and assess the effect of lifestyle intervention.

University of Florida is one of renowned universities in the US (#35 National Universities; #8 Top Public Schools according to US News). Dr. Cheng is committed to the academic success of students in his lab, which is enhanced by his education and training at renowned universities (Peking University, the University of Michigan, and Harvard University Medical School). Under Dr. Cheng’s supervision, the graduate students in his lab have been prepared as outstanding research scholars (e.g., Postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University) or teaching scholars (e.g., Houston Memorial Scholarship recipient for teaching excellence) depending on their career goals.

Applications are invited from those who hold a M.S. in biological sciences (e.g., biochemistry, molecular/cell biology, or a related field). Research experience in studying adipocytes, adipose tissue, and mouse models, is considered as a plus; so are peer-reviewed publications in international journals. Interested applicants should send their materials (CV and personal statement) to Dr. Cheng at z.cheng@ufl.edu and finish online application in the meantime. Detailed instruction can be find at https://admissions.ufl.edu/apply/graduate/. To be competitive for scholarship, please make sure to finish the online graduate school application by January 15th, 2019 for the Fall semester 2019.
